Grand Funk Railroad: Mark Farner (on left, switching between guitar and organ), Mel Schacher (bass) and  Don Brewer (drums), play a free concert in London’s Hyde Park, July 3, 1971 — their UK debut. Over 100,000 attended the show, with Humble Pie (featuring Peter Frampton) among the opening acts.
Six days later, they would play New York’s Shea Stadium, once again with Humble Pie opening. They’d sold all 55,000 tickets in only 72 hours — compared to The Beatles taking 80 days to do it in 1965!
Part of a ridiculously big year for one of 1971’s very biggest bands.
